Create Mac Bootable Usb from Windows

So  I had a bad day yesterday when my Mac crashed and I didn't have a Mac bootable disk/USB.

It took me hours to search and find a full proof solution to "Create Mac Bootable Usb from Windows"

All references were to create bootable disk from Mac system but none from Windows machine.

But now you are at right place

What You need
  1. Mac Dmg file : Say snowleopard_10a432_userdvd.dmg (For Snow Leopard 10.6)
  2. Transmac  software.
  3. A bigger USB Flash drive (say 8 GB)
  4. A computer (running in windows)
Steps to do
  1. Download  Mac  Transmac  file keep it in hard disk on your Windows
  2. Download  Transmac for Windows (2-week trial) can format USB drives for mac and restore .dmg files to USB drives. Download Transmac and install in Windows
  • In the right-side panel of Transmac, right click on your USB Drive >> Format Disk >> Format with Disk Image.
  • Point to your .dmg file and click Open.
This will take some time, For snowleopard_10a432_userdvd.dmg which is 6.2 GB it takes around 20 Mins to make a bootable USB

Now, Insert the bootable USB in Mac and restart it with Alt (Option) key pressed, You should see The External  bootable USB while start up, Select it and then follow steps to install Mac from scratch.

Note : You might get sectors error, Its better to clean the hard drive while installing the mac again. Clean the Hard drive so you don't get any error...

Updates : If you could update your MAC with 10.6 OS X and though the installation was clean, the system got stuck on start up screen. It kept saying that I need to shut down and restart MAC.

Restart MAC in safe mode, it would work ( Updates from user)

Happy Installing. Please provide feedback or ask questions if you have any doubt. Will be Happy to help.

    2. Hey there,
I tried this now several times with different .dmg images.
      iAtkos ML2,
      iAtkos L2
and original Mountain Lion from the App Store but it simply wont boot.
Is there a way to set an "active" flag or other needed changes for the stick to boot after restoring the dmg?
Im not able to set it to "active" with diskpart because it does not recognize the partition format and I cant select the partition (because to diskpart there is no).

I also tried to convert MBR to GPT but when I restore the DMG after that its MBR again so I dont think GPT is the right way.

Is there a way to just create a partition with TransMac, copy over the files in the dmg manually and make the stick bootable?

    4. i spent a day trying the above using poweriso and was getting no where. once i tried the above using transmac was a breeze. worked straight away. i created a bootable usb using a .dmg of lion 10.7.4 and installed on a macbook a1212.

if its of any help to anyone thats trying this (just so your aware) if you choose to use 10.7.0 to 10.7.5, you need a minimum of 2gb of ram and need to partition your disk in disk utility as "guid".

thanks for the post pritam pal, much appreciated.

    5. When updating from leopard to snow leopard, will this method wipe out the hard drive?

      Delete
    6. Ideally that shouldn't WIPE out while updating from leopard to snow leopard, but to be more careful when you upgrade look out for notifications and then decide. For me it didn't wipe out anything .

But be careful while doing this, be extra careful to watch out for Options.

  3. Thanks for the info.

    * In the right-side panel of Transmac, right click on your USB Drive >> Format Disk >> Format with Disk Image.

This option appears to have gone now from TransMac, instead, right click the USB Drive on the left, and select Restore with Disk Image.

I was able to update my MAC with 10.6 OS X. Though the installation was clean, the system got stuck on start up screen. It kept saying that I need to shut down and restart MAC.
After few failed attempts, I restarted my MAC in safe mode, and it worked.

    Thanks a Lot

  12. what I have read before was to remove the hard drive from your mac and (if possible) -use a sata to usb cable to connect it to a windows computer...then find something there(I forgot what was it but you can google it using "how to bypass activation on a MacBook".)...then once you did that, you need to write down something, a combination of 4 numbers, that might be one of the passcode for the mac..after you have written it down, return the HDD to your mac then boot it then make a combination - pls refer to the instructions on how to bypass activation on MacBook.

To Install Windows 7 with Mac run " Boot Camp Assistant"
You can use Finder to search the utility.

      Have a Happy Installation .

    1. Hi Ravindra
To Install Mac OS X on non Apple Intel Based Machines You probably like to use Hacintosh technology.

Read compatible hardware details and how to install here

    1. Hey Majdi

Can you please try to download "snowleopard_10a432_userdvd.dmg" from Piratebay and burn it in a pendrive ?

Latest (Kyle RamirezAugust 29, 2014 at 8:39 AM) says he could do it successfully.

To boot into Safe Mode, restart your Mac while holding down the Shift key. Keep it held down past the chime, until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Depending on your version of OS X, you may see the spinning gear change into a solid progress bar.

Let me know if You could do it, will try to help in case this doesn't work.
